Each To-Do has been estimated with a base number of days. That number is translated into a percentage of the total time to complete the doctoral research as well.

When you choose your goal completion date, your To-Dos base numbers are adjusted to fit between your start and goal end date. The To-Dos keep the original percentage of the total time, so everything stays proportional.
