Budgeting is an important skill for nurses in all settings. One of the most challenging responsibilities in the role of nurse managers and leaders is to balance the budget. Nurse managers have an important role in the financial management of hospitals and healthcare organizations. However, nurse leaders often lack the knowledge, skills, and competence in financial management to effectively manage organizational budgets. The high cost of healthcare, limited resources, and understaffing in many settings all contribute to the need for nurses to be knowledgeable of organizational operations to include budgeting.
