Budgeting is an important skill for nurses in all settings. One of the most challenging responsibilities in the role of nurse managers and leaders is to balance the budget. Nurse managers have an important role in the financial management of hospitals and healthcare organizations. However, nurse leaders often lack the knowledge, skills, and competence in financial management to effectively manage organizational budgets. The high cost of healthcare, limited resources, and understaffing in many settings all contribute to the need for nurses to be knowledgeable of organizational operations to include budgeting. Nurse leaders across all levels will benefit from gaining an awareness of the budgeting basics for nurse leaders. At the conclusion of the educational activity nurse participants will demonstrate knowledge of the budgeting basics for nurse leaders to include operating and capital budgeting used in healthcare organizations, key factors related to operating budgets, and performance indicators in the management of an operating budget.
