To maintain student privacy and legitimate records for our students, any legal name changes must be sent directly to the Office of the Registrar with proof of the correct name. At least one type of identification showing the new legal name is required. Email a copy of your documentation directly to the Office of the Registrar at [email protected].

Acceptable legal documentation includes, but is not limited to: driver's license, social security card, marriage certificate or court order

Walden University also supports an inclusive environment by allowing students to self-identify a chosen or preferred first name that differs from their legal name. A student's chosen or preferred name will appear in class rosters, learning management systems, and student information systems, but the legal name will still be used where required for official or legal purposes. The preferred name process is also available for graduation applications, though the diploma will reflect the name provided in the application. Walden reserves the right to deny or revoke chosen name requests that are inappropriate or misleading. Students requesting updates to a chosen or preferred name must submit an email request to [email protected]. For additional details, please see Chosen or Preferred Name.
