Grades Overview
There are many parts to the grading area. Here are a few of them.
- Assignment Titles: This lists your assignments. Click on the assignment names to navigate to them.
- Assignment Groups: If assignments have been grouped for weighting purposes, you will see the assignment groups here. Review your syllabus to identify if your course uses weighted grading.
- Grades by Assignment Group: This section displays your grades for each Assignment Group. This sample student has a 100% in the Assignment grouping but doesn't have a grade yet in any other Assignment Groups yet (i.e. Discussions and Quizzes).
- Assignment Scores: This column displays the grades you've received on your assignments (if they have already been graded). If there is an icon instead of a score then that has not been graded yet.
- Points Possible: This column displays the total possible points for the assignment.
- Comments/Rubrics/Feedback: When visible, an icon indicates that there is a comment from your instructor on this specific assignment, feedback, or a graded rubric depending on the icon. Click the icon to view the feedback.
- Weighting: This area displays how the Assignment Groups are weighted, if applicable.
Grading Comments
Your instructor may leave comments on your work, this is how you would view those comments.
- Comments Icon: Click this icon to view the comments left by your instructor.
- Comments: Once the Comment icon is clicked, comments will be displayed here.
Graded Rubric
In the Grade area, you may also find a clipboard icon (1). This icon indicates that a rubric has been used to assess your work. If you click the icon, the rubric will display. You can see from this sample rubric (2) that for this first criteria this student was assessed as Excellent.
Using What-If Scores
Canvas has the ability to calculate a "What-If Score". This allows you to view your grades based on potential scores so you know how your grades will be affected by upcoming or resubmitted assignments. You can enter What-If scores for an assignment that already includes a score, or an assignment that has yet to be submitted or graded.
Click Grades to navigate to your gradebook. Identify an assignment, click the score, and type a different score. For this example, the student had a 0 for the Week 1 Quiz and a 0% in the course in the top right.
A score of 25 was entered as a What-If score for the Week 1: Quiz. In the top right, this changed the overall grade to an 83.33 (B) for the course, since this was the only grade in the course. To the left of the What-If score there is an arrow. Clicking this allows you to revert the grade back to the original. If you navigate away from the page, it should also revert it. You can also click the Revert to Actual Score button at the top right of the page to revert all "What-If" grades.
Please Note: This does not actually change your grade. It only does a What-If grade calculation for you.
