Students can submit petitions concerning the required doctoral writing assessment for the reasons listed below. Documentation for each item as described in the list below must accompany petition requests. Documentation information provided with petition requests may be verified. Petitions without all required documentation will not be considered. All petition and appeal decisions concerning the doctoral writing assessment are made in the Office of Academic Support.

Students cannot submit petitions (a) requesting review of essays submitted after the essay assignment due date posted in the DRWA Doctoral Writing Assessment course, (b) claiming confusion about the essay due date, or (c) indicating they were not informed of the doctoral writing assessment requirement.

To request a second review of the assessment essay score, submit the standard Student Petition Request Form available on your MyWalden portal and a written explanation of 150-200 words specifying reasons why the essay should have scored differently in the DRWA Doctoral Writing Assessment course rubric categories.

To request a delay for one of your required writing courses by one term, submit the standard Student Petition Request Form available on your MyWalden portal specifying reasons why the delay is needed. Please note that students may receive approval for this petition only once. If a student is required to complete two writing courses as part of this assessment, that student may use this petition one time only for approval to delay one of those required courses by one term only. Students may not petition to delay both required writing courses. Petitions to delay a required writing course must be submitted before or during Week 1 of the writing course you wish to delay. Petitions requesting delay submitted after Week 1 will not be reviewed.

To request a second opportunity to enroll in DRWA Doctoral Writing Assessment, submit the standard Student Petition Request Form available on your MyWalden portal specifying the reasons why reenrollment is needed. In that the Walden Writing Assessment team sends multiple e-mail messages about the assessment requirement to students’ Walden e-mail accounts, students cannot submit petitions indicating they were not informed of the doctoral writing assessment requirement.

To request a 3rd attempt of a required writing support course or an extension to the one year deadline, submit the standard Student Petition Request Form available on your MyWalden portal specifying reasons why the extension is needed.

Submit all documentation for your petition as described above to [email protected]. Please note, per policy, your petition may not be considered if the incident occurred beyond 30 days ago. Petition decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis and the relevance and reliability of provided documentation. Petitions will be processed within 10-15 working days of the doctoral writing assessment team’s receipt of all required documentation. If you have questions about the doctoral writing assessment petitions process, please contact us at [email protected]
